History

Bellydance can also be done with accessories like a veil, finger cymbals, canes, swords and even candelabras complete with lighted candles.

Below are some of the styles of bellydance:

Egyptian Cabaret - Controlled, subtle movements. Refined and elegant. A good knowledge of Arabic music rhythms is needed, so that your body is like an instrument playing the music. Usually danced in a beaded bra and belt with skirt.

Turkish - Bouncy, more free style movements focusing on hips and pelvis. Costumes are usually more revealing than Egyptian style and danced in high heels.
Lebanese - An elegant cross between Egyptian Cabaret and Turkish styles. Lebanese bellydance is also danced in a revealing bra and belt set, usually with high heels.
Folkloric - Many countries have their version of folk dance. Characterised by earthy movements and mostly danced with accessories like a cane, basket or candelabra. Costumes are usually quite modest and can range from simple white tunic dresses to beaded evening gown type dresses.
American Tribal Style (ATS) - A unique style created in the USA. This dance style combines elements from different regions and usually performed in a group. This style emphasizes female bonding and sisterhood. Costumes usually consist of a gypsy type skirt worn with a cropped top, turban and ethnic silver jewelry.
